The Great Limpopo region covers Mozambique’s share of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park: Limpopo National Park beside South Africa’s Kruger, and Zinave and Banhine further north. These are conservation areas first and holiday destinations second, and where you stay is mostly a question of how remote you want to be.
This guide sets out what each base is like and who it suits. It does not list properties, prices or availability, and it does not replace checking current park access with the park authority.

How Great Limpopo is laid out
Limpopo National Park lies along the Mozambique side of the Kruger boundary, with Massingir and its dam on the Elefantes River as the main gateway town. The Giriyondo border post links the park with Kruger.
Zinave National Park lies further north, along the Save River in Inhambane province. Banhine National Park sits between the two in Gaza province, a landscape of seasonal wetlands and grassland. Distances between the three are long and roads are mixed; they are not a quick circuit.
Limpopo National Park
Limpopo National Park is the most accessible of the three, with Massingir as a practical base and the Giriyondo link to Kruger.
It works if you are combining Kruger and Mozambique, want a park experience with the most straightforward access in this region, or want lake and river scenery around Massingir.
It works less well if you expect Kruger-style density of lodges and game viewing; wildlife numbers are still recovering and the park feels wilder and quieter.

Zinave National Park
Zinave National Park is part of a large rewilding effort, with wildlife reintroduced over recent years. It is remote and best treated as a destination in itself.
It works if you are self-sufficient or travelling with an operator, value remoteness and conservation stories, and are prepared for a long overland journey.
It works less well if you want amenities or a short visit. Check road conditions and what the park currently offers visitors before planning.

Check before you travel: Border-post opening, park entry requirements and road conditions change with season and management. Confirm directly with the park authority.
Banhine National Park
Banhine National Park is a wetland and grassland park with very limited visitor infrastructure.
It works if you are an experienced, self-sufficient overland traveller or birder travelling with appropriate support.
It works less well if you are looking for any kind of conventional accommodation. Treat Banhine as an expedition-style visit and confirm access with the park authorities first.

Do you need a car?
Yes, for all practical purposes, unless you travel with an operator. A high-clearance vehicle — often a 4×4 — is the norm for these parks, and roads can deteriorate in the rainy season. Plan fuel carefully.
