Mozambique’s shore of Lake Niassa (Lake Malawi) is one of the country’s most remote and least visited corners: clear water, forested hills and small fishing villages, far from the Indian Ocean coast.
This guide explains the three main bases and who they suit. It does not list places to stay, prices or availability, and remoteness is the defining factor in every choice.

How Lake Niassa is laid out
Lichinga is the provincial capital of Niassa, on a plateau inland from the lake, with an airport. The road descends from the plateau to Metangula on the lake shore.
Further north along the shore, Cóbuè lies opposite Likoma Island, which belongs to Malawi. Much of the Mozambican shoreline is part of a protected lake reserve and Ramsar wetland site.
Lichinga
Lichinga is the practical gateway, with services and air connections.
It works if you need a base on arrival or before heading down to the lake.
It works less well if you want to be on the water; the lake is below the plateau.

Metangula is a lakeside town and the most accessible point on the shore.
It works if you want lake access with some services.

Border and boats: Crossing to or from Malawi by boat depends on border formalities and boat operations. Confirm current arrangements before you travel.
Cóbuè
Cóbuè is a small, remote village facing Likoma Island.
It works if you want real remoteness and lake scenery, and are travelling with time to spare.
It works less well if you need reliable transport schedules; connections can be irregular.

Do you need a car?
A vehicle suited to the roads is the most reliable way to reach the lake, although some travellers use local transport and boats. Allow plenty of time.
