This region follows the Zambezi River through north-western Mozambique. Tete city grew up on the river, and upstream the Cahora Bassa dam holds back one of the largest artificial lakes in Africa.

Songo, beside the dam, is the usual base for the lake, which is known for fishing and boat-based trips. Distances are large, and the region is often combined with overland travel from neighbouring countries.
