Central Mozambique is the most varied region on the site: a port city, a restored national park, mountain country on the Zimbabwe border and the tea hills of Zambezia. It is also a region of long distances, so the base you choose largely decides what you will realistically see.
This guide explains each base and who it suits. It does not list places to stay, prices or availability.

How Central Mozambique is laid out
Beira sits on the coast at the mouth of the Pungwe River, the start of the Beira corridor inland towards Chimoio and Zimbabwe. Gorongosa National Park lies north of the corridor, below Mount Gorongosa.
Chimanimani National Park is in the mountains along the Zimbabwe border, south of Chimoio. Further north, across the Zambezi, lie Quelimane on the Zambezia coast and Gurúè in the tea-growing hills.
Beira
Beira is the region’s main city and port, with an airport and services. It was badly affected by Cyclone Idai in 2019.
It works if you need a practical hub for flights and onward travel.
It works less well if you want a holiday city in its own right; most visitors pass through.

Gorongosa National Park is the region’s headline destination, with Chitengo Camp as the park’s main base.
It works if you want wildlife, conservation and guided park activities.
It works less well if you want a quick stop; plan for at least a couple of nights and check seasonal access with the park.

Chimoio
Chimoio is the provincial capital of Manica, on the Beira corridor.
It works if you need a practical stop for services on the way to Chimanimani or the border.
It works less well if you want scenery on your doorstep; the mountains are out of town.

Chimanimani National Park
Chimanimani National Park is mountain and forest country for hikers.
It works if you want hiking, mountains and a community-focused, low-key visit.
It works less well if you want comfort-focused stays; facilities are limited and a guide is advisable.

Check before you travel: Seasonal rains can affect roads and park access in this region. Confirm current conditions with the park or your accommodation.
Quelimane
Quelimane is the capital of Zambezia, on the Rio dos Bons Sinais.
It works if you are travelling overland through Zambezia or visiting on business.
It works less well if you want a leisure destination with tourist infrastructure.

Gurúè
Gurúè is a highland town in tea-estate country, near Mount Namuli.
It works if you want hill scenery, cooler air and walking.
It works less well if you are short on time; it is a long way from other bases.

Do you need a car?
Usually, unless you travel with an operator. Beira and Chimoio are on the main corridor, but parks and highland areas need a vehicle suited to the roads, especially in the rainy season. Gorongosa can also be visited with park-arranged transfers — check with the park.
