The Polana Serena Hotel is one of Maputo’s best-known historic hotels, built in 1922 in a grand palace style on the Polana side of the city, above the Indian Ocean. It combines a restored period main building with a newer Polana Mar wing, set in gardens that look out over the Indian Ocean.

It is not a beach hotel and not a budget option. If your trip is about the coast, Ponta do Ouro, Tofo or the islands are the places to stay; use Maputo for a night or two either side.

The hotel’s official address is Avenida Julius Nyerere 1380, in the Polana district of Maputo. It sits on grounds that the Aga Khan Development Network describes as four hectares, with the sea on one side and the embassy and residential streets of Polana on the other. In a straight line it is roughly 2.4 km east of our Maputo city-centre reference point, so the Baixa, the central market and the old fort are a short taxi ride rather than a walk for most visitors.

According to the hotel, there are 153 rooms: 87 in the historic main building and 66 in the Polana Mar wing. Categories run from studio and standard rooms to deluxe and executive rooms with city, garden or sea views, a range of suites, villas and kitchenette suites. The main building leans on Maputo’s Indo-Portuguese heritage with hand-carved wood details, while Polana Mar is more contemporary, so it is worth choosing the wing deliberately rather than booking the cheapest category by default.

It also works well for travellers who are nervous about arriving in an unfamiliar city, because the hotel itself is the destination for the evening.
Trade-offs, honestly
No property suits every trip, and Polana Serena Hotel is a better fit for some than others. These are the points worth weighing before you book.
Price positioning. This is one of Maputo’s top-end hotels. Expect to pay for the setting and the history rather than for extra space.
Two very different wings. Rooms in the historic building and in Polana Mar feel different. If period character matters to you, confirm which wing your room is in.
Not a beach stay. The hotel faces the sea, but it is a city hotel. Swimming and beach time are better elsewhere on the coast.
City logistics. Most sights are a taxi ride away, and Maputo traffic can be slow. Plan evenings around the hotel’s own restaurants if you do not want to travel.

Getting there and getting around
Most visitors arrive through Maputo International Airport and reach the hotel by taxi or a pre-arranged transfer; confirm with the hotel whether it can arrange one for your flight. Within the city, taxis and app-based rides are the practical way to move around, and you do not need a car unless you are continuing by road to the coast.
How Polana Serena Hotel compares
Compared with the modern hotels along Avenida da Marginal, the Polana Serena Hotel offers more history and larger grounds, while the Marginal hotels put you closer to the seafront promenade. Compared with guesthouses in Sommerschield or Polana, it offers full hotel services and meeting space, but less of a neighbourhood feel.
