Ndzou Camp is a community-owned eco-lodge in the Moribane Forest Reserve, part of the Chimanimani Conservation Area in Sussundenga District, Mozambique. Ndzou Camp opened in early 2011 as the first social investment of the social enterprise Eco-Micaia.

Best for

Ndzou Camp suits travellers interested in community-run tourism and walking safaris to see forest elephants.

It suits less well travellers wanting a conventional hotel room, since the camp mixes camping, bunk rooms, cottages and a self-catering house.

Location

The camp is in the Moribane Forest Reserve, within the Chimanimani Conservation Area buffer zone in Sussundenga District, Manica province. In a straight line it is about 27 km east of our Chimanimani National Park reference point.

Rooms and style at Ndzou Camp

Ndzou Camp offers a mix of accommodation types: camping, low-cost bunk rooms, en-suite cottages and a self-catering house, built from local materials with solar power. The operator does not publish a fixed count of each unit type, so guests should ask which option is available when they want to visit.

Facilities at Ndzou Camp

Verified facilities include solar energy and local building materials in construction, plus organised walking safaris focused on finding forest elephants. Ndzou Camp is staffed mainly by members of the Mpunga community, with the camp manager the main exception, reflecting its joint-venture ownership structure with the local Associação Kubatana Moribane.

Trade-offs and what to know

This is a community-run camp rather than a polished commercial lodge, so facilities are simpler than at larger safari properties elsewhere in central Mozambique.

Its remote forest-reserve setting means Ndzou Camp suits travellers comfortable with a rustic, off-grid style of stay rather than a full-service resort.

Getting there and getting around

Ndzou Camp is reached via the Moribane Forest Reserve in Sussundenga District; its operator does not state whether a 4×4 is required for the approach road, so visitors should ask Micaia Foundation about current road conditions before travelling.

Before you book

Before booking Ndzou Camp, confirm which accommodation type (camping, bunk room, cottage or self-catering house) is being reserved, and check meal and transfer arrangements directly with Micaia Foundation, since these are not itemised on its website. Given the camp’s history of storm and pandemic disruption, it is also worth confirming current operating status before travelling.

We do not publish fixed rates for Ndzou Camp, because pricing and availability change with dates and demand.
